Só um detalhe, a Mathworks oferece o Matlab para Linux
também.

Solution:

According to the MATLAB R12.1 Release Notes found
here:

The following distributions of Linux have been fully
tested by The MathWorks and are known to work with
MATLAB 6.1 (R12.1): 

Redhat 7.0 
Mandrake 8.n 
SuSE 7.0 
Debian 2.1 & 2.2 
Slackware 7.1 

Slackware 7.0 and 7.1 and Redhat 7.0 appear to have
issues with Java. For workarounds to this problem,
please see solution 26841 for RedHat 7.0 found here:

FreeBSD distributions of Linux are not compatible with
MATLAB 6.0 (R12). Our development staff has been
notified and will decide if FreeBSD distributions will
be supported in future versions of MATLAB.
