Abstract:
I will review what is known and what is not about algebraic surfaces with vanishing geometric genus and irregularity:
what are they, what are their properties, how to construct them, and what to expect of them.
Non-rational surfaces of this type can be imagined as fake counterparts of rational surfaces, and this analogy was useful for some recent progress on understanding geometry of those surfaces. Highlights: surfaces of Barlow, Beauville, Burniat, Campedelli, Catanese, Dolgachev, Enriques, Godeaux, Lee-Park, and fake projective planes (after Mumford, Keum, and others).
